Student Collaborations for Ocean Research and Education

SCORE Oceans Colloquium 2005

November 12-13, 2005
Hopkins Marine Station
Pacific Grove

SCORE will be hosting a 1 day interdisciplinary Oceans Colloquium in which Stanford participants from diverse disciplines such as geology, biology, law and engineering will come together to present ongoing ocean-related research in their laboratories and to share ideas about future collaborations. We hope this will serve to initiate relationships between research laboratories and lay the groundwork for more permanent venues of communication in the future.

Graduate students and postdocs are invited, as well as faculty. Meals for all participants will be covered. We expect to cover lodging expenses for presenters; other student participants’ expenses will be covered, funding permitting. All participants are required to register.

Presentation Format
Graduate and postdoctoral students from any Stanford department involved with ocean research or policy are invited to deliver short (10-15 minute) presentations summarizing current research in their laboratories. Talks should be addressed to a broad audience, with an emphasis on tools and resources that might be of interest to other labs.

Poster Sessions
The colloquium will include an afternoon poster session to maximize the sharing of information.

Social
The event will include lunch, a barbecue, station tour and hike in order to provide time for socializing and networking with fellow graduate students and postdocs.

Follow-up
All participants are asked to register with contact information and a brief description of research interests. Following the colloquium, this information will be placed in a searchable format on the SCORE website. In addition, we will distribute and collect a brief survey to gauge interest in the potential of future events to engender collaborations between graduate students involved in oceans research. Our hope is that this colloquium will represent a first step toward building a more permanent forum in which graduate students with overlapping interests can communicate
